Unveiling the mind: recognizing the clouds of ignorance in your yoga practice

One of the fundamental principles of yoga is to clear the veils of Āvidya (ignorance), allowing us to see with Vidya (clear perception). But how do we know when our mind is clouded? How do we recognize when we’re stuck in patterns that prevent us from experiencing true clarity and wisdom?

The Patanjali Yoga Sutras offer us four key indicators. like pillars—of mental obscuration. These patterns keep us from being fully present, open, and aligned with our highest truth. Recognizing them is the first step toward transformation.

  1. Asmita (Ego) – When the ego takes over, we feel the need to be right, get easily offended, and become defensive. We may seek validation from others, attaching our self-worth to external approval. This creates a false sense of identity, keeping us bound to illusion rather than truth.

  2. Raga (Attachment) – The tendency to cling—whether to people, experiences, or material things—stems from our deep desire for pleasure and comfort. We hold on tightly to what feels familiar, even when it no longer serves us, fearing loss or change.

  3. Abhinivesa (Fear of the Unknown) – This is the resistance to stepping outside our comfort zone, the unwillingness to try something new. We close ourselves off to fresh experiences because we fear failure, discomfort, or uncertainty.

  4. Dvesa (Fear of Pain) – Rooted in past experiences, this aversion arises when we’ve been hurt before and are determined never to experience that pain again. Instead of healing, we build walls around ourselves, avoiding situations that might trigger old wounds, even if they hold the potential for growth.

By bringing awareness to these patterns, we begin the work of clearing the mind, peeling back the layers of Āvidya, and moving toward deeper self-awareness and inner freedom.

Which of these patterns do you recognize in your own life? The first step to transformation is awareness.

Let’s journey together toward clarity and wisdom.
